Facebook is now investing its time in helping prevent suicide as the company is rolling out new tools to facilitate the initiative. The Social Media giant is going to start off by integrating tools in its ‘Live' videos platform that will help people in real time.
A live chat support was unveiled which originates from the crisis support organisations on Messenger and will be utilising artificial intelligence to achieve this feat. Suicide prevention tools have been available on Facebook for more than 10 years and were developed in collaboration with mental health organisations such as Save.org, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Forefront and Crisis Text Line, and with input from people who have personal experience thinking about or attempting suicide.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post “I wrote a letter on building the global community a couple weeks ago, and one of the pillars of community I discussed was keeping people safe. These tools are an example of how we can help keep each other safe,”
The suicide prevention tools will be giving viewers of a live video to reach out to the broadcaster in real time, as well as report the video. The tools while utilising artificial intelligence will also display a set of options and resources on the broadcaster's screen which will enable them to either contact a friend or contact a helpline or even get tips.

Facebook is also testing other artificial intelligence based systems where the reporting process can be even more streamlined and has the ability to recognise patterns in posts which have previously been identified or reported for suicide. “This artificial intelligence approach will make the option to report a post about “suicide or self-injury” more prominent for potentially concerning posts like these,” Vanessa Callison-Burch, Product Manager, Jennifer Guadagno, Researcher, and Antigone Davis, Head of Global Safety said in a blog post.
