Google Maps has added another tool to help keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week, the company launched the COVID layer in Maps, a a tool that shows important information about COVID cases in a particular area. The goal is to help people make more informed decisions about where to go and what to do while staying safe.
"Data featured in the COVID layer comes from multiple authoritative sources, including Johns Hopkins, the New York Times, and Wikipedia," Google's blog post reads. "These sources get data from public health organizations like the World Health Organization, government health ministries, along with state and local health agencies and hospitals. Many of these sources already power COVID case information in Search, and we're now expanding this data to Google Maps."
The new feature is now available worldwide for iOS and Android.

How it works
Open Google Maps, tap on the layers button in the top right corner, and tap on COVID-19 info. A seven-day average of new cases per 100,000 people in the area will appear, along with a label indicating whether the cases are up or down.
