LG's next smartphone will be called "Velvet" as the Korean tech giant moves to adopt a new design language and naming scheme.
On Sunday, LG announced plans to move away from "alphanumerical designations in favor of familiar and expressive names." That means the company is letting go of its G-series names like LG G8. Instead, future smartphone names will be based on special features or designs.
Velvet was chosen because the name evokes "images of lustrous smoothness and premium softness," which also describes the new premium smartphone, the company said.

LG is forgoing the industry trend of big camera bumps on the back of devices.
One of the standout features on the Velvet is its "raindrop" camera configuration. The main camera bulges slightly above the surface while the other two lenses sit beneath the smooth glass back of the phone.
