The Apple Watch
has a substantial number of different featured ranging from thing to
help you get work done to others that will help you stay fit. With so
many different features it can be hard to pick out one “standout”
feature for the wearable. After a month of use, we’ve picked out a few
of our favorites, however, that make having an Apple Watch worth it.
Really Pay Attention To How You Move
I’ve
been a FitBit user for several years, and have continued to wear my
FitBit along with the Apple Watch. I’ve really enjoyed the detail that
the Apple Watch goes into in watching your movement.
For instance, with the FitBit I just know that I’ve walked 15,000 steps
in a day and have been “active” a certain amount of minutes, all adding
up to a certain calorie burn for the day. With the Apple Watch I know
how many calories I’ve burned from movement as well as how many calories
I’ve burned from just existing.
I’ve found that even on days
where I have 150+ minutes of “active” time on my FitBit i might not
actually complete the Exercise ring on the Apple Watch. So, all those days I thought I’d been getting exercise-level movement in the past, I might have been falling a little short.
As
someone who writes for a living, I also spend a considerable amount of
time sitting in front of a computer during the day. I’ve really enjoyed
getting a gentle reminder on my wrist throughout the day suggesting I
stand up for a few. When you work at home alone, or even in a crowded
office, it can be hard to remember to take a break during the day. The
Apple Watch was just the reminder I needed to get up and stretch during a
longer work day.
Know if You Need To Pull Out Your Phone
When
I go out to dinner with friends, I’m always the one with my phone
sitting beside me on the table. The nature of what I do makes it
important for me to stay on top of email and texts until fairly late in
the day, but doing so often means I dive for my phone when I hear a
notification come in, even when it’s actually not something that needs
my immediate attention.
I’ve really enjoyed getting notifications
on my Apple Watch. With it I can put my phone in my bag, and know that
if anything important comes in I’ll see it on my wrist. That means I’m
spending less time overall on my phone.
Likewise, I don’t have to
constantly check my phone to see if an important email, text, or call
has come in — I’ll know immediately when it does.
Killer Directions
Turn-by-turn
navigation is one of the Apple Watch features I didn’t think I would
use, but really love. It's actually gotten me to start using Apple Maps.
With turn-by-turn navigation
you can load up a destination, and then get a gentle tap on your wrist
when it’s time to turn. I live in San francisco, and often have to load
up walking directions to locations i haven’t been to before. It’s great
to be able to get those directions without walking around with your
phone in front of you like a tourist.
