How To Deal With Gaming Addiction

Addiction is a deadly disease, and with the advent of science and technology we seem to be getting instinctively addicted to any and every obscure captivating object around us.

The new addition to this ever-growing list of addiction is the video gaming addiction. An alarmingly increasing number of gaming addicts are emerging from every corner of the world. So here are few tips and tricks on how to deal with, and curb gaming addiction.

We’re dealing with hardcore gamers over here. Who have an inflated ego (in the gaming scene), zero social life apart from the virtual interaction, and no sense of time and space. To put it in a nutshell, gaming addicts like every other addicts think that they’re doing the right thing. And hence acceptance is the key to start off the cycle. Making a gaming addict understand the magnitude of the situation is the first step into dealing with the situation.

The second important step is to understand the reason behind the addiction. There may be more than one. A crippling social life, introvert behavior, lack of self-confidence, fear and anxiety to face the real world, urge to seek acceptance, etc are some of the reasons for gaming addiction as gaming allows a gamer to a gateway of fantasy world that forms into a passage of escaping from the reality. Understanding the conditions makes it easier to deal with it.

The next step is to take precautionary measure after understanding the root cause of the addiction. The basic simple measures are to set-up a time-table and offering better diversions. Dedicating a certain schedule and sticking to it will help in inculcating the value of time, and a diversion will deviate them from sticking to video games for longer. Usually these diversions are certain hobbies or exercises that may play as the perfect substitute for video games.

Set Parameters
Having stringent rules and regulations in place does help in the long run, albeit going ‘cold-turkey’ and shunning out video-gaming will have its own grave repercussions. Letting the gamer ease out of the addiction is a safer bet than pulling the plug and cutting off the gaming altogether. This avoids frustration, incessant banter, etc. Substituting gaming time for group activities helps in honing a gamer’s social skill and makes him feel like a socially acceptable person.
